Germán Cueto

Germán Cueto's masks were unveiled to the public in 1924 at "Nobody's Café", a favoured haunt of Estridentista poets and artists. His leader, Manuel Maples Arce, called for an art of the imagination and demanded that visual artists focus on painting's essence, which in the end meant colour. He offered no comparable roadmap for sculptors, but the artistic vocabulary at work in Cueto's masks echoes Umberto Boccioni's 1912 Manifesto of Futurism Sculpture.
