Hermenegildo Bustos was born in Purísima del Rincón, Gto. on April 13, 1832. He studied only for six months with painter Herrera, who taught him little, used him mostly as a servant. Produced religious sculpture and mural programmes for his native parish; designed masks for religious festivales, painted retables, and hundred of small portraits, usually in oil on tin, of friends and neighbours. Interested in astronomy, left painted records of comets and eclipses. Designed coat he wore in 1891 Selfportrait. His portraits first collected by writer Francisco Orozco Muñoz of Guanajuato; home of later collector, Dr. Aceves Barajas of Francisco del Rincón, became Bustos Museum.
