Belonging to the second generation of muralists, this painter, engraver and sculptor was born in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán in 1908. He studied in the National School of Fine Arts under Germán Gedovius and Diego Rivera. In 1930 he was oficially appointed to found the Taxco School of Painting. His excellent graphic work shows the study of the 19th century lithographers and caricaturists. He occasionally contributed illustrations to the magazine Contemporáneos. He was a member of the League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists and was also one of the founders of the Popular Graphic Workshop, together with Leopoldo Méndez, Pablo O´Higgins and Luis Arenal. Alfredo Zalce left Mexico City to encourage a new generation of artists in his native state.
