Born in San Mateo Ixtacalco, Mexico, in February 2, 1918, to a Japanese father and a Mexican mother. Began art studies at the Academy of San Carlos, 1942. Spent five years as a painter’s aasistant working with Julio Castellanos, José Chávez Morado and Alfredo Zalce. First solo exhibition, 1951. Taught painting at the School of Visual Arts, beginning in 1955. Has participated in numerous exhibitions in Mexico and abroad. Important commissions include a ceramic mural in Keisei, Japan, 1981. Luis Nishizawa is recognized as one of Mexico’s leading landscape painters of the 20th century. His traditional approach and his reduction and simplification of forms ally him with such great landscape painters as Dr Atl, Gerardo Murillo. Nishizawa currently works and teaches in Toluca, in a late eighteenth-century house that he has converted to a studio and museum in which to display his paintings to the public.
